Welcome to my Substack, Autobiography of Generation X!
Autobiography of Generation X is the over-arching title of the series of novels based on my very real-life experiences. I have lived an interesting life, frequently in the sense of the old Chinese curse (“May you live in interesting times.”) I am planning a series of five novels grounded in reality, with a completely fictional novel as a possible number six. To be clear, these works are not intended to be presented as some boring-ass memoir, or an attempt at some weirdo manifesto or bitch-session. I present these novels as works of art, and as such, they stand on their own merit to be judged in the eyes of the individual reader alone. I am a firm believer in allowing a work of art to speak for itself, therefore I will make no comments on my writings - the works will speak for themselves.
My first novel is titled Juvenile Crimes. It covers much of my backstory going through college, law school, and my first job as an assistant district attorney. Be forewarned, my work is as gritty and graphic as were the events that happened. I want to put you, dear reader, into my skin, to have you see through my eyes to the best extent possible. For that reason, this is not a work for the weak or faint of heart. If you can’t handle it, don’t read it.
On the other hand, if you enjoy my work, please support it by becoming a paid subscriber. I am going with the lowest monthly rate of $5 per month, or a yearly subscription of $40. My intention is to publish at least one chapter per week, released on Sunday mornings (Pacific time). My goal is to publish at least a chapter per week. I am aiming for between five-thousand to ten-thousand words per chapter, though some may be a bit shorter or longer as the narrative flow dictates. Please bear with me if a particular chapter seems slow or short – it’s necessary to set the table for what’s to come. I also reserve the right to interject with an off-topic essay on occasion if national or world events sufficiently compel me to speak up.
I am doing this “About” section as a supplement to the Series Prologue I wrote (and have been very attached to) over ten years ago. This series of novels has been in the works for almost thirty years, particularly Juvenile Crimes, but life events and the stress of reliving some of these events in order to write about them have proven difficult over the years to motivate me to finish. It also took me a while to better appreciate the humor in some of the experiences I had along the way. But motivated I am - enough time has passed - and I will tell my story. I must. I have much to say.
Why Substack?
I decided to forego the traditional book publishing route and publish my works directly on Substack for several reasons. First and foremost is that not enough people buy and read books these days. Most folks get all their entertainment, including books, online in one form or another. I am open to the idea of publishing each novel in traditional book form after each has been published on my Stack, but this comes first. Additionally, the Substack publishing model provides far greater reward opportunities for writers than traditional book publishing, especially for new or unproven authors. It only takes a small fraction of paid subscribers to make a living as a writer on Substack as compared to the number of book sales it would take to draw a similar income.
The first book in particular, Juvenile Crimes, will be jumping through several various timelines. Stick with me as I promise they will come together at a few points to make sense of the whole story. The following novels will have more linear timelines.
If you enjoy my writing, please spread the word about my Stack to your friends and family and everywhere you can on social media! Referrals are the highest compliment.
Dedication
This first book, Juvenile Crimes, is dedicated to my father, Gary J. Miller (April 19, 1945 – September 7, 1995). He deserved a much better and longer life.
Also, and always, to the light and truest love of my life, my beautiful wife Catherine, and to the two most awesome children a man could wish to have, Jake and Shea.
About Wesley T. Miller
I am an attorney originally licensed in Oregon in 1995. After working in the District Attorney’s Office in Coos County, Oregon (much of the subject matter in Juvenile Crimes), I hung out a shingle in a Portland, Oregon, suburb to practice solo in the areas of criminal law, civil rights, and some family law matters. That time period will be the focus of my second novel. The third book will deal with the aftermath of witnessing a murder, having a serious attempt made on my own life, and walking away from the legal profession in complete disgust. Books four and five are intended to cover my first foray into Hollywood and my return to the legal profession, followed by number five dealing with my experiences with Michael C. Ruppert and CollapseNet. Number six, if I have an audience for it, will be a fictionalized but realistic story and projection of the future as I see it.
For over the last twenty-some years (sometimes intermittently), I have been practicing intellectual property law, focused on trademark and copyright law. Currently I am holding out a shingle in Studio City to add entertainment law to my practice. You can find my law practice at wesentlaw.com.
